Most sleep product claims come from marketing copy, not research. This one didn't.

A study published in the Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness in May 2025 tracked 30 adults over two weeks to see what actually happens when you wear far infrared sleep socks to bed. Not a survey. Not a testimonial. A clinical trial with objective sleep tracking and a validated insomnia questionnaire.

Here's what the researchers found.


How the Study Was Run

Researchers recruited 30 participants — 13 men and 17 women, ages 21 to 64 — from two clinical centers in Italy. Everyone in the study wanted to improve their sleep, and none had diagnosed sleep disorders or were taking sleep medication going in.

The protocol was simple. For two weeks, participants tracked their baseline sleep with no socks. For the following two weeks, they wore far infrared technical socks every night before bed. Objective sleep data came from wearable sleep trackers worn continuously — total sleep time, sleep stages, heart rate, and breathing rate. Subjective insomnia severity was measured using the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), a standard clinical questionnaire used to diagnose and track insomnia.


What Changed

How foot warming affects sleep through hypothalamus activation

The insomnia numbers were the clearest result. Average ISI scores dropped from 10.4 to 5.7 — a statistically significant reduction (P<0.01). At the start of the study, only 26.6% of participants had no clinically significant insomnia. By the end, that number was 60%, and nobody in the study remained in the moderate insomnia category.

Specific insomnia symptoms improved too. Difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, how much sleep problems interfered with daytime activities, and how much participants worried about their sleep — all showed statistically significant improvement.

On the objective side, slow-wave sleep increased by about 9 minutes on average (P=0.03). This is the deep sleep stage most closely tied to physical recovery — tissue repair, growth hormone release, the kind of restoration that doesn't happen during lighter sleep stages. Total sleep time and REM sleep also trended upward, though those changes weren't statistically significant.

By the end of the study, 8 out of 10 participants said they'd recommend the socks for improving sleep.


Why Foot Warming Affects Sleep at All

The mechanism isn't mysterious. Researchers point to the preoptic anterior hypothalamus — the brain's thermoregulatory control center — where warmth-sensitive neurons respond directly to skin temperature changes. About 30% of the neurons in this region are warmth-sensitive, and their firing rate increases at sleep onset and during slow-wave sleep specifically.

Warming the feet increases blood flow to the skin's surface, which helps the body dump core heat faster. That process is part of what triggers sleep onset in the first place — it's the same reason a warm bath before bed can help you fall asleep faster. The difference with socks is that the effect isn't limited to the 20 minutes before you get in bed. It continues for as long as you're wearing them.

That's a meaningfully different claim than "you'll sleep better," and it's backed by data instead of assumed.
